Birmingham Deaf Community Group

This group was founded in 2008 by a group of interested volunteers and was the first of the community groups to establish themselves in the new Deaf Cultural Centre.

Its aim is to provide opportunities for Deaf and hearing people with an interest in the Deaf Community to socialise, reduce Deaf people's isolation by arranging social events and to promote wellbeing for Deaf people.

They hold a variety of social gatherings and special themed evenings at the Deaf Cultural Centre which everyone can participate in and enjoy, including regular bingo events and also support other community groups in arranging their own events.

Last year, for example, a Prom Evening was held for young people which raised funds to support local Deaf youngsters.

Following a successful first year, at their AGM it was agreed that the group would be formalised and that a constitution be created outlining their aims and objectives. They also established the group's structure which is now administered by a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer and they work with the Community Development Manager at the Deaf Cultural Centre. They hold a modest budget, which was inherited from their predecessor the Birmingham Deaf Sports and Social Club. This can be used to support other community groups wanting to establish themselves and not having the funds to do so.

This group welcomes everybody and there is absolutely no charge for membership.
