New Sports Project coming to the DCC!

27 July 2010

BID Services is working with StreetGames to create new opportunities for young deaf people to take part in organised sport. StreetGames is a national agency that works to develop sporting opportunities for young people aged 8 to 19, usually those who live in disadvantaged areas and who are currently experiencing one or more disabilities.

Deafness and hearing impairment can be very isolating and  project is set to engage with young deaf people and empower them to access sport on their own terms and when relevant, to assimilate with mainstream sport provision.

To support the initiative, BID Services undertook a series of consultations within educational establishments and youth groups to find out what sports are the most popular. Our findings revealed that young deaf people are interested in a wide range of sports including go-carting, dodgeball, trampoline, cycling, football, gym and ice-skating.

The programme will provide opportunities to create new partnership models with other sports providers and to create links with mainstream youth sport provision.

An open evening to discuss the project, along with the first taster session starts on Tuesday, 27th July, 2010, at 6:00m at the Deaf Cultural Centre, Ladywood and young deaf people between the ages of 8-19 are welcome to attend.
