British Deaf Football comes to Birmingham and the Deaf Cultural Centre!

Birmingham Deaf Football, whose home is at the UK’s first and only Deaf Cultural Centre, will be competing for a place in the Final for the Deaf Plate Cup.  The football tournament is being organised by British Deaf Football and they will award the Deaf Plate Cup and the Deaf National Cup trophies to 2 different teams.

On Saturday 27th March, the semi-final will be taking place at Aston University Recreation Centre in Birmingham Road, Great Barr, B43 7AJ. The Birmingham Deaf team will be playing against Edinburgh and kick-off will start at 2:30pm. The spectators will include Deaf Cultural Centre staff and Birmingham Deaf Community, many of whom will be cheering for their home team to pull through.

The afternoon will see 8 national teams competing with the first kick off at 12pm between Derby and Leeds for a place in the final for the Plate Cup. The 2nd match will be between Birmingham and Edinburgh. The 2 other teams (Doncaster versus London’s St Johns and Fulham versus Glasgow) competing for a place in the final for the National Cup will also begin at 12pm and 2:30pm respectively.

It will be an achievement if Birmingham gets to the Final for the last time they won anything was the British Deaf Football Trophy 18 years ago in 1992-1993. To celebrate the efforts of all the footballers and their supporters in the tournament, a disco is being held at the Deaf Cultural Centre during the evening following the semi-final matches.

British Deaf Football is hosting the evening event alongside the Deaf Cultural Centre, with support from Robin Ash, the centre’s Community Development Manager, who is looking forward to a much talked about match, “It is amazing that Birmingham Deaf Football have got this far and it is great that the matches for both the Plate and National Cups, especially at such an exciting stage, are now taking place in Birmingham! It is such a fitting tribute to all the deaf footballers in all the national deaf teams and their supporters to have a disco held in their honour”.

Robin has been guiding and providing support to the Birmingham Deaf Football Club committee who are dedicated to ensure that Birmingham Deaf Football continue to grow and welcomes anyone who would like to join either the committee or the playing team. The group regularly practises on Wednesday evenings and the weekend at the local leisure centre in Birmingham, not far from the Deaf Cultural Centre.

Robin continues, “I am proud for the Deaf Cultural Centre to be part of the evening event, which will give each club the great opportunity to see the building and the exciting facilities that we have to offer them. What better place to celebrate than here at the centre, which is a central meeting place for everyone to forge new friendships, partnerships and more importantly, socialise! On behalf of the Deaf Cultural Centre, we would like to wish all the competing clubs, the best of luck in their matches for a place in the Finals. We have confidence in Birmingham lifting the Plate Cup…come on, Birmingham!”

Please note that the Final will be taking place later this year.
