From November to December 2009 for 5 weeks, there were activities for young Deaf people at the Deaf Cultural Centre.

They were organised by the centre's Community Development Manager, Robin Ash and they included introductions, dance and games tasters! Two of the evening sessions involved a consultation meeting with BSLBT and an evaluation meeting.

Between 23 and 27 young people attended each evening session from 8.30pm until 10pm. The aim was for them to participate in leisure activities whilst giving them the opportunity to make new friends and have fun!

Robin Ash said, "It wasa great success. It was good to see so many young people attending and taking part. Each session was full of laughter as you can see from the photos!".

Following feedback from the young people, it has been decided that the activities will continue in the New Year on a fortnightly basis. We will be announcing details on this very soon!

The British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust (BSLBT) was established in 2008 to increase the amount of sign-presented programming on television. There are over 60 television channels with an audience share of between 50,000 to 100,000 and they are now required by Ofcom (the regulatory body for the field of media) to deliver BSL-presented programmes.

During February and March, the BSL Zone showed selected documentaries from the BBC and C4. From April 2009, a range of different strands from drama, chat shows to children's shows and sport transmitted weekly.

On Saturday 24 October 2009, the British Deaf History Society (BDHS) held their Annual General Meeting at the Bantock House Museum, which is situated at Finchfield Road, Wolverhampton. Robin Ash, Community Development Manager for the Deaf Cultural Centre was elected as Trustee for the BDHS. The BDHS's Chair, John Hay, who is on the board of directors for the Deaf Cultural Centre, was also re-elected for another term.

Robin also had an exhibition stand from which information about bid services and the Deaf Cultural Centre were distributed to the visitors. This was to promote and raise awareness about both organisations. bid services' "Hands at Work" DVD, a signed video exploring deaf people's working lives in the 1920s - 1940s, were also given out. The development and production of this video was funded by Heritage Lottery and formed part of the Deaf Heritage Project. There is no charge for a copy of this DVD, complete with subtitles, and can be obtained from bid services.

The aim of the event was for BDHS membes to find out about the society's work over the past year on all aspects of deaf history. The guest speaker was Helen Steatham, curator and manager of the Bantock House Museum who explained about her exciting and innovative project on improving access for deaf people when they go to museums and galleries. She told us about the implementation of the PDA which has proved to be a great success for deaf visitors. When they go to the Bantock House Museum, they collect a PDA from reception and follow the signed version of the information about the museum on it.

She also highlighted the benefits of liaising with other organisations, one of which was the Deaf Cultural Centre when an exhibition, previously exhibited at the museum was then shown at the Ladywood Road venue for 3 months. This brought deaf history to the general public and generated interest with memories for the deaf visitors.

On Saturday 17th October, the Deaf Cultural Centre was represented at the Ladywood Constituency Convention and Award Ceremony at the Council House in Birmingham.

Robin Ash, Community Development Manager, had an exhibition stand from which he distributed information and answered questions from local councillors and the community which saw more than 100 people in attendance. This was to promote and raise awareness about the Deaf Cultural Centre and bid services as they are based in Ladywood.

The aim of the event was for local people to infuence priorities for the areas that they live in. Also it was an excellent opportunity to celebrate the commitment and hard work shown by the people of Aston, Ladywood, Nechells and Soho who are all part of the Ladywood Constituency. A number of awards were given, one being the 'Cleanest neighbourhood' which was givien to the Ladywood area.

During the day, a film crew from Noor TV interviewed various people at the event for a programme called 'Community Time'. Robin took part in this and briefly talked about the Deaf Cultural Centre and bid services. His part may be broadcast today on Thursday 22 October at 6pm on Sky Channel 819. Please watch out for this!

Saturday 26th September saw the very first 'Community Fun Day' taking place at the Deaf Cultural Centre. This was a celebratory day to mark the 2nd anniversary of the Community Launch 2 years ago which saw the UK's first purpose built Deaf Cultural Centre open their doors for the first time to the public.

Children and young people enjoyed face painting and made creative necklaces and key-rings with an artist from DANUK (Deaf Arts Network UK) Linda Bagnall, who set up a family friendly workshop with her co-worker, Clair Rushton.

A bouncy castle was outside in the glorious sunshine for them to have a go and many of them challenged their friends on the karting race-track. Afterwards, Silkie the Clown provided a circus workshop, which brought entertaining fun and laughter to many of the young people.

For the adults, the on-site cafe was open to provide breaks, a chance for friends to catch up over coffee and lunch. bid services, NDCS, the Deaf Cultural Centre along with its sub-groups for the Birmingham Deaf Community Group and the Birmingham Deaf Diversity Group set up information stalls for visitors to learn more about each organisation and group and the kind of events they organise throughout the year.

The Community Fun Day was not only aimed at deaf people but also everyone. Robin Ash, the centre's Community Development Manager, said 'It's an achievement for the Deaf Cultural Centre to reach its second year and we could not let this pass unnoticed without making it significant for the visitors. It's always brilliant when the communities come together, catch up and enjoy themselves and I hope that the activities we provided for the day did just that'.

Celebrations for the evening included a deaf quiz of which 5 teams challenged each other on 5 different rounds. Some subjects covered the recent news, the history before the Deaf Cultural Centre was built and all about the sub-groups. At the end, there could only be one team to win and it was the excellent partnership between Teresa Allcock and James Cowdrill which saw them collect the highest points, giving each money for their prize.

Artsfest is a Birmingham City Council event and takes place annually in Birmingham. It is completely free to attend! Inspired by the UitMarkt festival in Amsterdam, ArtsFest was created in 198 to 'excite and intrigue audiences' by the sheer magnitude of what was on offer by local artists and to build new audiences for these artists of the region. Since then, ArtsFest has grown in size and reputation and is now firmly established in the City's events calendar during the second weekend in September.

Deaf Performer Jayne Fletcher (Fletch@) is also performing her creative and expressive Signsings at various locations throughout the weekend! The first one is on Saturday 12th September, 3.15pm at the Rep Theatre (The Door) in Centenary Square. Entry is free and her performance will last 30 minutes.

She is also having one of her films showcased on the same day but at 5.30pm - 6pm. You can see it at the Crescent Theatre (Ron Barber Studio).

On Sunday 13th September from 1.40pm - 2.10pm at the Flapper, Fletch@ will be leading a Signsong Performance.

ArtsFest 2008 showcased 447 artists or organisations (involving approximately 4500 individual people) and 581 performances, workshops or exhibitions. Around 245,000 attended over the course of the weekend.

The ArtsFest 2008 programme covered a wide range of arts and cultural activities - from flagship companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and a host of bands, choirs, youth dance and theatre companies and individual artists. All art forms were represented and there were a whole host of opportunities to participate.

ArtsFest 2009 takes place from Friday 11th September to Sunday 13th September and 'Anniversaries and Celebrations' is the festival theme. Sunny, Olivier, Fletch@, Lisa and Robin hope to see some of you there!

bid trustee John A. Hay MBE who is also on the Board of Trustees for the Deaf Cultural Centre arranged this special trip for Anita to visit us. She met Mike Reynolds, Chair on bid services' Board of Trustees before she met with Gail Penberthy Development Director, Angela Murphy Team Manager of the Deaf Cultural Centre and Robin Ash, Community Development Manager. Robin said, "This was a great opportunity for all parties to discuss and share information. Although both centres are on opposite sides of the world, they are linked with the same aim and vision for deaf people to be empowered and be involved in exciting initiatives and creative projects".

Anita elaborated on the Deaf Culture Centre in Canada, in which she said, "The Deaf Culture Centre opened at the historic culture, arts and entertainment Distillery District right in the heart of Old Town Toronto. It is contemporary, a fun gathering place that is open to the public and rooted in the Deaf community. It provides education, culture, visual and performing arts and also features a museum, art gallery and a gift shop. We also have archives, state-of-the-art visually rich technology highlighting Deaf historical artefacts, literature, sports, ASL/LSQ interactive television/website and a multimedia production studio".

Before ending her visit, she also met Sunny Chana, a devoted and inspirational artist of DANUK (Deaf Arts Network UK), which is based at Birmingham's Deaf Cultural Centre. Sunny briefly mentioned the development of the network over the past two years. He also told her about the kinds of roles the deaf artists play, including the continuing support they give to current and future artists before giving her a guided tour of all the art pieces currently on display inside Simister Hall.

Robin presented Anita with an art piece of work on behalf of the Deaf Cultural Centre which was created by Sunny himself. On receiving it, she sad "It is wonderful to learn about the Deaf Arts Network and to see you and other artists' work at the centre. I especially wish to thank you for the lovely piece of art you have gifted to our Deaf Culture Centre, we will find a lovely spot for it in our centre. I hope you find a way to come and see it for yourself!".

On Saturday 25th July 2009, the Deaf Cultural Centre was ‘the place to be’ for a double event of a reunion and a Prom for young Deaf People.

Both events were arranged by Birmingham Deaf Community Group with guidance and support from the Centre’s Community Development Manager, Robin Ash, after lots of requests from Deaf people of all ages for such events.

Adorning the walls and tables in Ashton Rooms were lots of photographs of those who attended Longwill School for the Deaf and Braidwood School from as early as the 1960s. Those who came for the reunion met childhood friends they had not seen nor kept in touch since they left school. Classroom memories and school stories brought much embarrassment and laughter.

In the United States, prom, short for promenade, is a gathering of high school students, held at the end of senior year. Quite recently, schools in the UK have followed suit calling the above events Proms in imitation of the North American tradition. BDCG and the Deaf Cultural Centre decided to join by hosting a Prom for young Deaf people.

On the same evening in Simister Hall, the above event took place with more than 50 in attendance. Most of them had just finished their final year at Braidwood School and celebrated their leaving at the Prom. Young deaf men wore black tuxedos, the ladies colourful dresses and most danced the night away with their date for the evening. At the end, two were crowned ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ to the delight of their friends.

It was also an evening of special significance for one family where the parents and their children attended the same school. For the parents, it was their reunion but for their children now in their late teens, it was the Prom making the evening for the whole family truly unforgettable.

There were more than 100 people attending the Deaf Cultural Centre that evening. A buffet including fresh strawberries and ice-cream was provided by the on-site Café and catering staff. Everyone enjoyed a formal photo-shoot for their own photograph to record their attendance at what was a very memorable evening.
